Mindy Lighthipe holds a BFA , cum laude in studio arts and a MA in Art Education from Kean University in New Jersey. Her love of Natural Science brought her to the New York Botanical Gardens to study scientific illustration. At the Garden she completed the Botanical Illustration certification and the Master’s Certification for “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” with Dr. Betty Edwards.

Mindy is the Vice President of The Guild of Natural Science
Illustrators- Greater NY Chapter. She also belongs to the American Society of Botanical Artists ,The Colored Pencil Society of America and the North American Butterfly Association. She teaches scientific illustration and coordinated the program from 1995-2005 for the New York Botanical Gardens Botanical Illustration Program. She developed the Natural Science Certification Program at NYBG in 2001. She leads artists trips to Central America and Europe.

As a freelance artist she has created work for the Entomological Society, The North Carolina Aquarium, The Audubon Society, Kitchen Garden Magazine, Better Homes and Gardens and numerous environmental giftware companies.

As a fine artist she has had several one woman shows; Aviarios del Caribe in Costa Rica, The New York Botanical Garden Gallery, Cyanamid Corporation, The Frelinghuysen Arboretum, and the Audubon Society.
She has participated in group shows at The Albany State Museum, Schering Plough, Nabisco Corporation, The Frelinghuysen Arboretum , The Bruce Museum and The Watchung Arts Center. Her work is owned in private and corporate collections in the United States and abroad.

Mindy opened her school in 2004. Studio 16 is located at 16 Old Stirling Rd in Warren, NJ. The school offers quality art instruction in an intimate setting.The school provides a forum for artists to meet, share, and work together in a supportive and nurturing environment.Core classes are offered in drawing and painting in graphite, colored pencil and watercolor. A variety of specialty workshops are available in digital photography, pastels, botanical illustration, wildlife, bookmaking and collage.
