All art, all creativity, is an expression of the unknown. Each creative act starts out with the empty canvas, the blank page, tablua rasa. The artist, the creator, must reach into a place that it smokey and unclear, the primordial mirror, and with an act of faith, start something. This, for me, is the brilliance, the outrageousness of being an artist. I don't feel compelled in any way to dissect any particular image or approach for any great length of time. Change compels me to keep working. Yet for each change, there is a consistency of handling which continually amazes me. Even when I try to make a work look like it was created by someone other than myself there is something strongly 'me' which comes through. It speaks so often to the essence of things, an examination of the dao in our lives. On top of these changes there are consistent issues that come through. For one, the art is always about communication. Whether it be communication about myself or communication of a particular story, there is always a desire to reach out and stir someone. Another quality that has come into my work frequently is the need to challenge the viewer to think about what they are seeing. I depict an image with a certain point of view, which then creates awareness in the viewer of themselves and the assumptions they make. I provide simple, sometimes direct, sometimes discreet, concepts which I hope will move people to think a little deeper and more responsively. Paul Pinkman April 2004 |
